In this lesson, we will enter the profound world of Chapter 39 of the Tao Te Ching. Laozi presents a revolutionary cosmological vision:'One'. In the turbulent era of the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, with fragmented thoughts and collapsing politics, 'One' is not merely the beginning of quantity, but the concrete embodiment of the Dao in the phenomenal world, symbolizingwholeness (Wholeness)and inseparable internal connectivity.
The Sixfold Symphony of Gaining 'One'
Laozi points out that cosmic stability is not accidental, but stems from an intrinsic integrative force:
Those who once gained OneโHeaven gains One to be clear, Earth gains One to be tranquil, Spirit gains One to be spiritual, Valley gains One to be abundant, All Things gain One to flourish, and Rulers gain One to serve as the steadfast standard for all under heaven.
These six dimensions form a completesustained order. Particularly noteworthy is'Zhฤn'the character. In political philosophy, if a ruler maintains 'One' (the purity of the Dao), refraining from abrupt changes and deviation from nature's fundamental laws, he becomes a stable foundation for societal operation (Zhฤn meaning 'righteousness' and 'standard').
Modern Insight: The Balance Point of Systems
Imagine a healthyrainforest ecosystem. Millions of species (All Things) thrive because they possess an intrinsic balancing mechanism (the 'One' of the system). Once rainfall (Heaven), soil nutrients (Earth), or rivers (Valley) lose this core stabilizing principle, the entire flourishing system collapses rapidly. This is why Laozi emphasizes the importance of 'gaining One'โthe functioning of all things depends on their adherence to 'wholeness'.
